Picasso's Buffon is one of the greatest bestiaries of the twentieth century. In this series we encounter a visionary movement.
He began these etchings in 1936 at the request of the publisher Ambroise Vollard, who sadly did not live to see their completion as he died in 1939.
Picasso completed an etching a day. The spontaneity of the plates is attested by the freehand margins, the repidly drawn line and the use of fingerprints for textural variety.
The bestiary was finally published by Martin Fabiani in 1942. Picasso did not sign the etchings.
